So you’re a gamer? If you’re serious about your gaming, then you’ll need to make sure that you’re using the right equipment to take care of yourself.

Although the dangers in videogames are usually regarded to be virtual, there is a risk of developing aches and pains due to your posture or picking up a repetitive strain injury through constant button pressing.

Whether you’re a professional eSports gamer or someone who games for fun, you need to take care of your physical health while you’re gaming.

Here’s a guide to the type of kit you’ll need to game without injury.

Comfort is Essential

If you’re planning on spending a considerable amount of time sitting in front of a screen battling your way through whatever game you’re currently on, comfort is essential.

You’ll no doubt be too engrossed in the activity in the game to realize that you’re actually probably not that comfortable.

Poor posture and a seat that offers nothing in terms of support and comfort can all contribute to problems later on. The way you sit when you’re gaming could give you neck or back problems.

If you’re going to spend a lot of time gaming, invest in a comfortable gaming chair.  Good gaming chairs will look like executive office chairs crossed with cockpit chairs in a plane. Think about getting the best back support possible, right up to your neck and head.

Armrests will be important too as they can help you maintain a comfortable position while still playing.

Taking Care of Your Mouse

Repetitive strain injuries can be very painful. They build up gradually and you’ll not even realize that you’re setting yourself up for one.

Gamers are quite susceptible to this type of injury, and if you’re not careful, you’ll end up with a dulling ache in your hands and wrist.

You can avoid getting an RSI by using the right control devices.

If you’re a PC gamer that uses a mouse, you’ll want something that’s ergonomic and comfortable to use. Find the right type of mouse that suits your hands and the way that you grip the mouse when you’re using it.

Ergonomic Controllers

In much the same way as with your PC mouse, your games controller needs to be ergonomic, easy to hold and to use, and one which you can use comfortably.

Think about the position that your wrists and hands are in when you’re holding your controller. You will need to avoid twisting your wrists in an uncomfortable way.

Where are the buttons on the controller? You don’t want to have to overstretch your fingers and thumbs to make movements.

The controller needs to be lightweight enough that it doesn’t weigh down on your wrists, but sturdy enough to provide the support you need while gaming.
