Where Nerds Eat: Sub Culture
by Michael Quezada
In my quest to find the best sandwich in Orange County, and by giving up on all chain stores, you can only recreate the same sandwich over so many times, my brother in law and I came across a real diamond in the ruff. First of all my love for sandwiches has no end, from the Vietnamese Bahn Mi to the French Dip to the classic Meatball, I love them all and could probably have at least one a day. Sub Culture is a little place on Warner in Huntington Beach, that I just cannot stay away from, and now that they have added Door Dash, I might be getting stuff from there at least once a week. This is the place to go for extraordinary sandwich, let’s first start with the bread. Dutch Crunch ( also called Tiger bread, for its striped lines) is crisp on the outside and fluffy and light on the inside, they get the bread delivered every day, and this is the start of a beautiful creation.
Like most sandwich places you create your own, on the day I went, I brought my son and he created pretty little creation, ( sliced Chicken, Cheddar Cheese and plain), his little sandwich was served hot quick with enough cheese that you really didn’t need any other topping. They have a selection of house specials, I have gone there enough that I have eaten my way through the menu. I decided that this time I would go for one of their specials, and I was not disappointed, it was a large Pulled Pork Sandwich: Coleslaw, BBQ Sauce, Fried Jalapenos, Garlic Spread and and Sharp Provolone. My other favorites so far have been the Dirty Dominator: Hot Roast Beef, Bacon, Cheddar, Pepper Jack, Avacado, Jalapenos, Crumbled Chips, BBQ Sauce and Hot Sauce. The Godfather: Salami, Pepperoni, Cappicola, Sharp Provolone, Sundried Tomatoes , Cherry Peppers, and Dressing. The Raven: Hot Pastrami, Salami, Pepper Jack, Avocado, Jalapenos, Crumbled Chips, and Hot Sauce.
This is a small place, I have called many a time and they have said that they cannot handle any more phone orders or that it would be at least 45 minutes to get my order. Don’t think you’re going to one of the chain places where your food makes the jump to light speed and you’re in and out in 5 seconds. This is a place where they hand craft extraordinary sandwiches, and you will get it when it’s ready, so get there early. They also do catering, so if you are looking to feed the office you can get a platter pack. Regardless of how you order, you will not be disappointed.
